Our Process
At Kornreich Design Associates, brainstorming is an essential component of the creative design process—it’s where fresh ideas come from. We use this phase as an opportunity to pour out all types of concepts—just dump them out and reserve judgement for later. Imagine shaking all of your thoughts onto a piece of paper. Now, look at them from every angle. Show them to one another. Play off of each other’s sketches. Worry about logistics later.
For example, a few years ago Steve Thompson was starting a custom western boot manufacturing company and needed a logo. He wanted us to design something simple and straightforward. Something that could be embossed into each boots’ heel to leave an impression with every step.
So, we took the elements and played with them. Boots. Thompson. Thompson. Boots. Simple. We realized that boots make some pretty interesting patterns themselves—and took that concept to the next level. Some old western typefaces have knobs—or spurs—on them, so we took a basic letter form and incorporated it with our design.

Owner Catherine “Kiki” Kornreich—a sixth-generation California native—is an award-winning graphic designer with more than 30 years of experience. Inspired by her love of the Central Coast, she founded Kornreich Design Associates in San Luis Obispo in 1987. Her creative logos, branding, and design can be seen throughout the county and beyond—among numerous businesses, professionals, and non-profits. Her collaborative team of creative talent shares some common-core principles: love what you do, laugh heartily and often, and—whenever possible—answer with “Well, why not..!?”
